Why Diversity in Mentoring Matters

Angela Byars Winston Chris Sorkness

Two UW-Madison Professors involved with HELI were featured in an ‘Inside UW’ email that went out today, so we’d like to highlight them as well!

Dr. Angela Byars-Winston leads a National Academy of Sciences committee studying whether mentoring can increase diversity in STEMM fields. Read all about it here. For HELI 2018, Dr. Byars-Winston will facilitate a session on Culturally Aware Mentoring, a module from the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) curriculum.

Dr. Christine Sorkness, Associate Director of CCHE and HELI senior faculty, was recently highlighted by her home department in the UW School of Pharmacy. Dr. Sorkness is working with NRMN to tackle the diversity problem in biomedical fields through mentoring. Read all about it here. “Science is stronger when it’s diverse,” says Dr. Sorkness.

Thank you both for all that you do!
