CCHE encourages you to APPLY to the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) Health Disparities Research Institute (HDRI) taking place August 14-18, 2017!
The HDRI aims to support the research career development of promising minority health/health disparities research scientists early in their careers and stimulate research in the disciplines supported by health disparities science.
The program will feature lectures, mock grant review, seminars, small group discussions on research relevant to minority health and health disparities. It will also include sessions with NIH scientific staff engaged in related health disparities research across the various institutes and centers.
When I attended the NIMHD Research Institute, I learned more about advanced behavioral science methods, community based participatory design, and health equity issues/trends from national experts in health equity who had been successful in receiving NIH funding for their health disparities research. I read through real NIH applications and participated in mock NIH K and R reviews which were simulated as close as possible to a real review. The other scholars and I saw firsthand how grant applications were reviewed on the NIH campus. I learned about the health equity funding opportunities available in the different agencies via lectures by actual Scientific Review Officers and program officers from each NIH agency/institute. I got one-on-one time with program officers to discuss my health equity research ideas, obtain feedback, and ask questions. Finally, I was able to meet and engage with other health equity researchers across the nation with who had similar goals and challenges in addressing health disparities.
The due date for application submission is May 12, 2017 at 5pm local time. The online application process is now open and you may begin the application process here.
